Student Support Grant – £500 (or £600 to be spent on dive equipment in Go-Dive Ltd)

MSDS Marine are pleased to be able to offer two annual grant awards for maritime archaeology in the UK.

The MSDS Student Support Grant is intended to help support maritime archaeology students in the UK. The growing MSDS Marine team includes a number of early years’ professionals who have all recently completed university courses. Their recent experience highlights the significant costs faced by students to complete their education. We strongly believe fieldwork and other training experiences help create professionals with a more rounded skill set and are keen to help allow students to maximise the experiences that they get. To this end we offer many volunteer opportunities for students but we are now also keen to help support them financially to gain experiences which might otherwise be unaffordable.

We recognise that training to be a maritime archaeologist can have huge costs associated with it for equipment purchase and additional courses outside of the scope of the main University degree courses. This award is designed to help with specific costs of equipment and training (including conference attendance) for students on undergraduate and masters level degree courses in the UK. On completion of their work, the successful candidates must submit a 500 word blog, and at least three images, for publication on the MSDS Marine website detailing what the award has been used for. Submissions will be judged by MSDS Marine in consultation with University Departments.

In 2023 the closing date for applications is Sunday 5th November. This year, to help celebrate fifty years of protected wreck sites, we are really keen to hear from students who would use the grant to help support something related to protected wrecks. It could be through volunteering, research or supporting Licensees in another way!
